What is the difference between invisible/underground dog fence and GPS fence? We get asked this question frequently! Also over the last couple of years we get calls all the time from customers that installed a GPS fence that doesn’t work. Here is blog article we wrote to help clarify the differences.

1. Boundary Precision and Consistency

In-Ground Wired Systems: Offer precise and stable boundaries, as the physical wire defines the containment area. This consistency ensures reliable training and containment, minimizing confusion for pets.

GPS-Based Systems (e.g., Halo Collar): Subject to boundary fluctuations due to GPS signal variability, which can be affected by weather, terrain, and obstructions. Reports indicate boundary shifts up to 16 feet, potentially leading to inconsistent corrections and pet confusion.

2. Battery Life and Maintenance

In-Ground Wired Systems: Typically use replaceable batteries with extended life spans, reducing the frequency of maintenance and the risk of system failure due to battery depletion.

GPS-Based Systems: Require frequent charging, often daily, increasing the risk of the collar being non-functional if not adequately maintained.

3. Training and Reliability

In-Ground Wired Systems: Provide a consistent training environment, as the fixed boundaries help pets learn and adhere to their limits effectively.

GPS-Based Systems: Inconsistent boundaries can complicate training, as pets may receive corrections unpredictably, potentially undermining the training process.

4. Installation and Portability

In-Ground Wired Systems: Require professional installation, which ensures optimal placement and functionality but lacks portability.

GPS-Based Systems: Offer portability and ease of setup, allowing for flexible use in various locations, which can be advantageous for travel or temporary setups.

Why Underground Wired Fences Outperform GPS Systems

🎯 Precision: Fixed boundaries ensure consistent training and containment.

🔋 Battery Efficiency: Longer-lasting batteries reduce maintenance and risk of failure.

🐶 Reliable Training: Stable boundaries facilitate effective pet training.

🏡 Professional Installation: Expert setup guarantees optimal performance.

How Does an Underground Fence Work?
Invisible fence® , also called an electric fence or underground fence, operate on a system that transmits energy between the boundary line you establish, a home base monitoring/transmitter device, and the receiver that is attached to your dog’s collar. The actual fence is a set of electrically charged wires that are placed about 3-4 inches underground the boundary areas. A transmitter is set up in your garage or on a wall in a room in your home. As your dog approaches the boundary line, the tone deters your dog from going further.

More About the Electric Charge
The most common misconception in our industry is that many customers worry that the “shock” hurts their dog. The “shock” is more of a mild stimulus similar to a quick static shock – just enough to alert your dog and stop his/her movement, but not enough to hurt or cause any harm.

Many dog lovers worry that the electric shock is painful or emotionally traumatic to your dog. However, if you hold the collar in your hand and hold it over the boundary line you will find that it is neither painful nor shocking, but merely irritating. In other words, it is an effective and safe deterrent. Veterinarians, trainers, and others respected in the industry confirm that it is the most safe and effective way to contain a dog, possibly saving a dog from harm.

Connecticut E-Fence Pros certified trainers have successfully trained dogs of every breed, size and age on our safe electric fence system. Our behavior training uses advanced techniques to teach your dog the boundaries of your property in a safe, humane and effective manner.

Features of a Fence System

Levels of Correction
You should consider how many levels of correction the product offers. This feature refers to the amount of energy in the deterrent “shock” that was mentioned earlier. If you have a stubborn, strong-willed, or physically strong dog, or if you have multiple dogs of varying sizes, you will want to have more correction levels available in order to custom-design the corrections for your dog. E-Fence Pro’s collars have over 30 levels of shock, that can be customized for a timid dog, stubborn dog and any dog in between.

Battery-Backup
Most wired dog fences do not have battery-backup capability. This feature is essential to your pet’s containment during a power outage from a powerful storm. A battery-backup capability is a very good safety feature to ensure your dog will be contained even in a power outage. It simply is not worth the risk to opt out of this feature. Connecticut E-Fence Pros has a battery-back up built into the transmitter instead of an add-on like many other fence companies have.

Rechargeable Collars
Most underground fence companies have collars that require a battery. While these collars do work well, they can be cumbersome and costly. You have to regularly test your dogs collar to make sure the battery is still good and usually replace it every 2-3 months. Connecticut E-Fence Pro’s environmentally rechargeable collars lasts over a month without a charge. Our rechargeable collars are the only product on the market that work with medium and large size dogs!

– Provides safety for your dog while also giving them freedom to run around
– Gives you the option of not having to walk your dog every time he has to go relieve himself, especially in inclement weather
– Some neighborhoods and cities have fencing laws or even prohibit fences altogether so this can be done in exchange
– Protects your dog from traffic, strangers, and any other dangers outside the boundary
– Cheaper than other a regular fence
– Helps train your dog
